Project Based Learning focuses on questions that ENGAGE students, driving them to explore the concepts and principles of a subject hands-on, skillfully applying their knowledge across the curriculum.
When students understand the MEANING of what they are learning, they will be motivated to achieve their goal while retaining more information of the subject matter.
Project Based Learning is an effective STUDENT-LED method that facilitates creativity and addresses various learning styles. Students actively learn and construct a meaningful physical representation of what they have learned, demonstrating the connection of the subject matter to their own lives and experiences.
It’s all about context. Students can learn area, perimeter, volume and shape by completing worksheets, or they can design a dream home, working out how much flooring and baseboard are needed, what kind of heating and air conditioning units they will need (volume), the best shapes to use while having a balance of creativity and efficiency... And so on. Projects and problems engage student imagination and create a context for their learning. They require a more intense intellectual focus, while often providing more learning style choices. This is why project and problem-based learning strategies have become so popular.
